He sheds his Montana accent and reverts to the Southern California voice he normally uses. Kevin Costner is the patriarch who runs a dynastic ranch the size of some countries. Tourist promoters, tribal rights, and the authority of the state of Montana interfere with his way of life.
Costner seems to fill his character’s boots naturally
Reminiscent of Rock Hudson in “Giant,” he tries to stick to the old ways. “Yellowstone” unfolds quickly with little introduction, but its story unfolds at the natural pace of a day in the wilderness, pausing for tribal rituals, cowboy customs, and political intrigue. It’s a wide-ranging undertaking at the intersection of law and justice, family and friendship.
Country and family are his lifeblood
He’s a man exhausted by the world who’s seen too much and lied to too many times. He can hear footsteps coming toward him, but he can only fulfill his role out of habit as much as loyalty. Though some of the actions are a bit confusing due to lack of explanation, it feels natural, as if the viewer is getting a true glimpse into another world.
I’m raising the rating to a “9”
I hope the resolution of this saga includes an emotional payoff that justifies its breadth and attention to detail. Update 7/20/18: After four episodes, this series has a strong voice and a steady pace. We discover the fullness of each story, from roots to fruits.
