When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with presiding over one of the world’s most secret and ancient events, the election of a new pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the foundations of the Catholic Church. Welcome back from the darkness. It feels like a long time ago there was a good old, serious-minded, tense, "big" drama film with big movie stars. Well, that’s exactly what the director Edward Berger serves, who presents the Oscar-winning ALL QUIET ON THE western FRONT (2022) fresh with his latest film. Writer Peter Straughan (TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY, 2011) adapted the 2016 Robert Harris novel, and the result is a crowd-pleaser that may deserve some Oscars.
Ralph Fiennes gives his best performance yet
And that’s saying something for the respected actor, who has previously excelled in films like SCHINDLER’S LIST (1993), THE STANDING GARDNER (2005), IN BRUGES (2008), THE BIGGER SPLASH (2018) and THE MENU (2022). . His impressive career is only enhanced by his latest role as Cardinal Lawrence, burdened by the heavy burden of assisting the titular conclave tasked with electing a new pope. As the film opens, the beloved Pope has just left… and as they say, “let the games begin”.

Of course, these games are about political maneuvering and power struggles and backstage promises. Director Berger chooses to show us very little of the actual negotiations, instead setting up various iterations of loyalty during each successive secret ballot (of course). Between the narrow walls of Vatican City and the Sistine Chapel, Cardinal Lawrence' and spends most of his time investigating tips, berating others for their behavior, and dealing with the huge egos of the few (including himself). Stanley Tucci plays Cardinal Bellini, who pretends not to want the job while the 'progressive' gives voice to the church now. John Lithgow is Cardinal Tremblay, one of the most self-confidently ambitious, who may or may not have deliberately undermined the work of others.

Cardinal Tedesco, played by Sergio Castellitto, is most evident in his desire to restore the church to the old ways (Latin Masses forever!), which he sees as right. Bryan F O’Byrne plays O’Malley, Lawrence’s assistant, and despite all these men, Isabella Rossellini as Sister Agnes manages to shoot (figurative) fire out of her eyes while keeping her “place”. Impressive and memorable in his limited role. A big surprise comes early on in the form of Cardinal Benitez (Carlos Diehz) from Kabul, who was most recently appointed by the previous Pope and unknown to the others. As a novel, it can be a real page-turner, but the film does not rush from one moment to the next.
Tension builds with each revelation, obscured cloak and secret plot
While the film barely touches on the years-long sexual abuse scandal at the church, it does take a number of twists and turns as the cardinals are locked away. It’s impressive to see how cinematographer Stephane Fontaine keeps things visually interesting in a closed environment filled with characters who aren’t allowed to go anywhere else. Another aspect I really appreciated was the unusual musical composed by Oscar winner Volker Bertelmann. This is the type of film that often has dominant music in the 'fix' tension, yet Bertelmann’s notes are effective jabs at the right time. Power play, corruption and political stunts are all present as these Men of God mess up the process of choosing their next leader.
